Why SouthEast Automation

From Process to Manufacturing

When your machine, line or process needs it, we evaluate how to extend the productive life of your machine or process: right-sized drives and controls, modernization of aging equipment, and the service to keep it running.

That means working side by side with Bosch Rexroth on electric drives and controls, with Schmalz on vacuum and handling, and with our technology partners on the intelligence layer — then standing behind it with engineering and field service across the Southeast.

From a single failing drive to a full line modernization, the goal is the same: more uptime, less downtime, and equipment that keeps paying you back.

Our People

Meet the Founders

The people behind SouthEast Automation Solutions — engineering, commercial leadership and a working knowledge of the plant floor.
Greg Phelps, Co-Founder of SouthEast Automation Solutions

Greg Phelps

Co-Founder

Greg Phelps brings more than 30 years of industrial automation experience to SouthEast Automation Solutions. A graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Greg began his career performing cost-reduction analysis for factory production — developing a practical understanding of how manufacturers can improve productivity, efficiency and profitability.

Throughout his career, Greg progressed from an Inside Applications Engineer to the General Manager of leading automation distributors. This experience gave him a comprehensive perspective on the industry, spanning engineering, applications, sales, operations, business development and executive leadership.

An entrepreneur and product patent holder, Greg previously founded and launched a systems integration business before co-founding SouthEast Automation Solutions. His expertise encompasses robotics, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), motion and control technologies, and comprehensive industrial automation solutions.

Greg’s combination of engineering knowledge, commercial leadership and entrepreneurial experience enables him to understand the challenges facing both manufacturers and machine builders — and to develop practical automation strategies that deliver measurable results.

Scott Shepard, Co-Founder and CTO of SouthEast Automation Solutions

Scott Shepard

Co-Founder & CTO

Scott Shepard has spent more than thirty years in industrial automation, and he came to it through the machines themselves. He began in 1992 at one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers, designing and improving assembly and metal cutting machines, then moved to the world’s largest machine tool company as an application engineer — years spent on real equipment, against the tolerances and cycle times that decide whether a line makes its numbers.

He went on to join one of the largest European-based motion and control companies as a sales engineer, later leading a team of sales engineers and managing a district. There he learned drives, servos and machine architecture from inside the company that builds them — the grounding that still shapes how he approaches an application today.

Across his career Scott has contributed to thousands of machine designs spanning packaging, machine tools, sortation, mining, entertainment, robotics, AGV and ASRS systems, process control, assembly, welding, test, simulation and converting. The technical range runs as wide as the market range: motion control, PLC and HMI, robotics, actuators and sensors, functional safety, SCADA, Industry 4.0 and industrial networks, hydraulics and pneumatics. That breadth is what lets him see a problem in the context of the whole line rather than a single component.

At the third largest electrical distributor, he built and led a commercial and industrial sales, services and engineering organization, developed a Florida services strategy that outpaced the national growth average, and earned national recognition for a modernization and total-cost-of-ownership approach that treats aging equipment as an asset to extend rather than replace. He tripled production on an OEM’s largest machine by taking on the project management, panel build, engineering, programming and test.

The question isn’t whether we can help. It’s what you ask us for.

You already assume a distributor can get you the part, and you’re right. The question is what you ask us for.

Send a part number and you’ll get a price, a lead time, and exactly the outcome you’d get from anyone else on your approved vendor list. Describe the process instead — what the machine is doing, what it isn’t doing, what it costs you when it stops — and more than sixty years of combined experience across OEM, integrator, end-user and municipal projects comes with the answer. Every problem we solve for you, we’ve already solved somewhere else. But only if we get to see the problem.

What changes when you do:
We’ll argue with your part number. If the component you asked for is the wrong answer to the problem behind it, you’ll hear that before you get a quote, not after the second failure.
We size it for the application, not the order. We’ve watched oversized and under-engineered both fail. The specification comes from people who have designed the machine, not only sold the component.
The person who quoted it is the person who shows up. Engineering and field service come from the same team. Nobody hands you off.
We’d rather extend the machine than sell you a new one. Modernization and total cost of ownership ahead of replacement — even when replacement is the bigger order.
Tell us what the machine is doing. We’ll tell you what it needs.Talk to an Engineer
